Margaret J. De Young

MARGARET J. DE YOUNG, 92, formerly of Little Falls on Monday, March 29, 2021.

Born in Little Falls she was a lifelong resident before recently moving in with her son, Jay and wife, Karen in Pompton Lakes.

Marge led an accomplished life centered around service to her Family, her Church and her Community. She had been employed at NJ Bell Telephone Co., the Executive Offices of A&P Food Stores in Paterson; owner of Little Falls Diner for several years and for 26 years was Secretary to the Director of Buildings and Grounds of Passaic Valley Regional High School. She was a 1946 graduate of PV and a plaque designating her as a “Distinguished Alumnae” hangs in the school.

She was a lifetime member of Second Reformed Church of Little Falls where she wore many hats including 1^st Woman Elder, Sunday School Teacher, Director of Junior Choir and Girls’ ensemble, Chair of the Woman’s Guild, Soloist in the Senior Choir, and Missionary Chairperson.

Marge served the Community of Little Falls in many ways including Member of the Township Committee from 1985-1991, First Woman Mayor in 1987, and Police and Fire Commissioner.  She was appointed to the Little Falls Ethics Committee, President of the Republican Club and 1^st Secretary of the Little Falls Historical Society.

Known as the “Kate Smith of Little Falls”, Marge sang at all events at Passaic Valley Reg. High School including “Hail to Alma Mater” and the National Anthem. She also sang at 55 weddings and many funerals.

She was predeceased by her sister, Irene Spaak; her three brothers, Charles, Samuel, and John “Jack” De Young.

Survivors include: her son, Joseph “Jay” Shovlowsky and his wife, Karen of Pompton Lakes, NJ; her two grandsons, Jake S. Shovlowsky and his wife, Meghan and Justyn E. Shovlowsky and his wife, Shaina and her great granddaughter, Lyla Mae.

A Walk Through Visitation will be held from 3-7 pm on Wednesday at Bizub-Parker Funeral Home, 47 Main St., Little Falls. A Funeral Service will be celebrated at 10AM Thursday at Second Reformed Church, 6 Walnut St @ Ridge Ave., Little Falls. Facemasks must be worn and social distancing regulations apply.
