Robert Edward Barnes passed away on January 17, 2022 at the age of 79 in Little Falls, New Jersey.
Bob was born in Englewood, New Jersey, and grew up in Saddle River, New Jersey.
Bob joined the Navy and served from 1959-1963. He served on board the submarine USS Cobbler, as well as the amphibious assault ship USS Okinawa. Bob was a member of the first crew of the USS Okinawa, and proudly held a plank ownership certificate for this honor.
After he left the Navy, Bob worked at Ford Motor Company, IBM, and Herman Miller. Although he often wore an expensive suit commuting to his job in New York City, Bob was happiest enjoying the warm sunshine on a beach or tropical island.
He was an avid baseball fan and ardent supporter of the NY Yankees. He also was a competitive and skilled game player, who passed along his love of cribbage to his children. He also loved shuffleboard and throwing darts. He could often be seen completing his beloved NY Times crossword puzzle, always using a pen.
Bob was self-taught and highly intelligent, and prided himself on reading books and always learning. He was personable, witty, and quick to come up with a good “Dad” joke or pun.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Betty Barnes and his brother, John Barnes. He is survived by his brother, James Barnes; three children and their spouses, Robert Edward Barnes Jr. (Melissa), Matthew Barnes (Ann), and Sarah Motyka (Mark), and 4 grandchildren (Kaitlyn, Holden, Rachel, and Alexandra).
A memorial gathering will be held on Sunday, January 23, 2022 from 2-5:00 pm at the Bizub-Parker Funeral Home in Little Falls, New Jersey. Memorial Contributions to Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, 875 N. Randolph St., Suite 225, Arlington, VA 22203 (nmcrs.org/donate) would be appreciated.
