Obituary

Joan A. (nee Allen) Wos, 90, of Little Falls died peacefully Sunday, June 5, 2022, with her loving daughter, Karen, at her bedside.

Born in Union City, NJ, Mrs. Wos was raised in Jersey City, NJ, where she resided until she married in April 1960 and moved to Clifton, NJ.  She lived there prior to making Little Falls her home in 1969.

Mrs. Wos graduated from William L. Dickinson High School in Jersey City and attended Barbizon Modeling School.  She was featured in Cosmopolitan Magazine, after being selected at Central Plaza Dixieland in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village.  Following graduation, she pursued a secretarial career path with her first job at the Credit Bureau of North Jersey in Union City.  Following that, she was employed at Yardley of London in Union City from 1950 to 1952 and then went on to work in the sales department at WOR Radio in New York City from 1952 to 1954.  In keeping with the entertainment theme (one of her life’s passions), she continued working in Manhattan as an executive assistant, first at the business office of Loews International Theatres for three years and then Campus Film Productions in 1958.  She was employed there until 1963, when she left to raise her daughter, Karen.  Years later, she worked part-time for The Herald News, Sears, Manpower and Visiting Health Services.  During the few years Mrs. Wos and her husband, Ron, lived in Spring Lake Heights, NJ, she also worked for Michael F. Clark & Associates.  She officially retired in 2004.

Mrs. Wos was a lifelong devotee of music and entertainment – she enjoyed Broadway shows, classic films, Dixieland jazz, Big Band and Swing music and dancing.  On the night of their engagement, they attended “The Music Man” on Broadway, which led to their selection of the wedding song, “'Til There Was You.”  Mrs. Wos and her husband were devoted fans of their good friend and musician, Al Rando, who played piano at the Jersey Shore, where they initially met at the Hoffman House in Point Pleasant in the late 1950s.  In her later years, she was an avid reader and enjoyed playing solitaire (the old-fashioned way with an actual deck of cards) and doing word search puzzles.

Mrs. Wos was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Ronald F. Wos on June 9, 2020; her parents, Robert and Julia (nee Nolan) Allen and her brother, Robert J. Allen.  She is survived by her daughter, Karen Wos of Woodland Park, NJ, and many cousins.  Additionally, survivors include her brother-in-law Robert Burkowski and his wife, Gayle, of West Virginia; four nephews and nieces, Richard, Ellen, Robin and Roger, and six great-nephews and nieces.
