Patricia Alger Obituary

PATRICIA ANNE ALGER, nee Byrnes 92, of LITTLE FALLS died Monday, January 29, 2024 at home.

Born in New York, NY, Mrs. Alger resided in the” Village” and married in 1956 moving to Flushing, NY to raise her family and pursue her teaching career before moving to Little Falls in 2015. A true enigma of “the depression” Patricia attained professional success and was a Master’s prepared educator from The College of our Lady of the Elms and Queens College. She was a retired Catholic School Elementary Teacher and Reading Specialist most recently at St. Bartholomew’s School in Elmhurst, NY. Leaving behind many friends and professional peers, Mary “O”, Anita , Debbie and Maryann- too many to list. No matter how you knew her -Pat, Patsy, “Byrnesie” was an avid reader, dancer, and world traveler. Following the loss of her husband (1979) Pat enjoyed the company of two special suitors prior to their deaths Chuck Freese (1992) and Thomas Donahue (2007).

She was also most fortunate to have lifelong friends from NY- Ellie, Pat, Silvia, MA-Anne Marie, FLA and “new friends” here in Little Falls that made her life so enriched. She was most appreciative of the close friendships of Karen, Connie, Terri, Nicky- so many to list- and held a special place for the Little Falls Senior bus driver Kevin Nendze who along with everyone kept her independent. active and engaged be it the Little Falls Library, at a party at the Civic center or a play or concert at LF elementary schools or Passaic Valley Regional High School. Like the song goes “she did it her way…”

Mrs. Alger was a parishioner of Holy Angels RC Church, Little Falls where she was a member of the “golden girls”. Additionally, she was a member of the Golden Agers of Little Falls and the Little Falls Jolly Seniors where she enjoyed cards and rummikubs and the associated friendships.

She was predeceased by her husband, Walter Alger; her parents, John and Mae (nee Lockwood) Byrnes; her son, Timothy Alger and by her sister, Mary Jane Byrnes and her favorite dogs Whiskey and Tip Top.

Survivors include: her daughter, Maripat Alger Cottone and her husband, Michael of Little Falls; her two granddaughters, Michaela and Katharine Cottone – the lights of her life-and her first cousin, Mary Brady.
