Richard J. Mattioli

RICHARD JOSEPH MATTIOLI, known to family and friends as Richard, passed away on June 26, 2026, in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, from natural causes. He was 76 years old.

Born on December 23, 1949, in the Bronx, New York, Richard lived a life marked by creativity, passion, and a deep sense of individuality. He carried with him the spirit of the city where he was born, and throughout his life he remained a man who saw the world through an artist’s eye. Those who knew him best will remember him as interesting, thoughtful, and deeply engaged in the things and people he cared about.

A talented artist, Richard was an accomplished painter and sculptor whose work reflected both skill and imagination. He devoted himself to his art with patience and purpose, creating pieces that spoke to his perspective and his appreciation for form, color, and expression. His creativity was not limited to the studio, as it was also evident in the way he approached life, relationships, and the world around him. He had a passion that was unmistakable, and he brought that energy into every endeavor he pursued.

Richard was predeceased by his parents, Aldo J. and Helen Mattioli, née Rosato, as well as by his brother, Lloyd Mattioli, and his sister, Barbara Vanderhoof. Their memory remained an important part of his life, and he carried his family ties with him throughout the years. He is survived by his three siblings, Patricia Kozubal and her husband, Adam, of Succasunna, Linda Vitale and her husband, Joe, of Whiting, and Aldo Mattioli and his wife, Patricia, of Wayne. He also leaves behind many nieces, great-nieces, and great-nephews, all of whom were part of the extended family that surrounded him with love and connection.

Richard will be remembered not only for his artistic accomplishments, but also for the unique presence he brought to every room. He had a way of making an impression that was both quiet and lasting. His life was one of expression and devotion, and his legacy lives on in the work he created and in the memories held by those who knew him. The qualities of creativity, passion, and interest that defined him will remain part of the story he leaves behind.

In times of remembrance, words often fall short, yet the sentiments of a life well lived endure. As Pablo Picasso once said, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” Richard did remain an artist. He embraced that calling throughout his life, and in doing so, he gave others the gift of seeing the world through his vision.

His passing leaves a deep void in the hearts of his family and all who appreciated his talent and spirit. Though he is gone, the beauty of his work and the warmth of his memory will continue to be cherished. Richard’s life was one of substance, creativity, and enduring character, and he will be remembered with love and respect by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
